Dear parents and guardians,

Believe it or not we are already reaching the point at which some students will begin to finish their IGCSE, AS Level and A Level examinations. I remain optimistic about the sorts of results that our students are going to achieve this year but I also wanted to take the opportunity to write to you to outline some of our plans for them over the course of the next few weeks as we try to prepare them for the next phases of their education. As you may be aware, there is a considerable gap for current Y11 students to bridge as they move on to the study of AS Levels in terms of both the intellectual rigour and work ethic required to be successful. For that reason we propose to run AS Taster lessons from Wednesday June 17th to 19th. Obviously, neither we nor the students can be quite sure which subjects they will be studying in August but this will still be an invaluable opportunity to experience AS level learning and indeed inform decisions about possible subject choices going forward.

As you know, we place considerable value on developing leadership skills in our students. We do this throughout their time at Baobab College and in a variety of different ways. However, we place particular emphasis on it as students enter the 6th Form. To this end, we would like all prospective Y12 students to attend a day’s leadership training on Monday June 15th with a respected outside trainer whom we have invited into school. Any current Y12 students who are staying on, who were not Prefects this year and would like to be considered for the year ahead should also attend. On Tuesday June 16th our Head of 6th Form Mrs. Lang, together with a team of colleagues, will be leading a series of sessions with students entitled “Moving On Up” aimed at helping to prepare them for some of the challenges of adult life in our complex modern world. All students intending to be in either Y12 or 13 next year should attend.

Again you will be aware that we encourage all 6th Form students to participate in the excellent International Youth Award, which promotes and develops values and skills that we believe are essential in providing a holistic education for our students. A key element of the course is for students to make a significant contribution to serving their local community and we will be arranging opportunities for them to do just that throughout the course of the week commencing June 22nd. Current Y12 students moving on to the study of A2’s in Y13 need to make an early start in their chosen subjects and make good use of the July holiday so A2 lessons will begin for them on Monday June 15th and carry on for two weeks. Finally, we will be beginning the process of interviewing candidates to be School Prefects during the course of the two weeks in question. I hope the table below makes all of these opportunities and their timings clear:

Date Activity Students involved
June 15th Leadership training Y11 and prospective Y12 Prefects who did not attend last year’s training
June 15th– 27th A2 lessons begin Current Y12 students staying on for Y13
June 16th “Moving On Up” day looking at the practical, personal and moral challenges of our complex modern world Current Y11 and 12 students
June 17th-19th AS Level taster lessons Current Y11
June 17th– 27th Prefect interviews Potential School Prefects
June 22nd -27th Community Service Current Y11 students intending to join our 6th Form in August
June 29th – July 2nd Work experience for those 6th Form students who have made arrangements to sample their chosen careers Current Y12 students

On a more social note, this years’ Prom is set for June 13th starting at 18:30 and is to be held at Lilayi Lodge.

Transport to the venue from school will be available for those who require it. Tickets, available form the school reception, will cost K120 and include a 3-course meal and 2 soft drinks. In addition, the Lodge is offering an excellent room rate of K1000 for any adults who wish to stay the night.

Finally, I hope that we will see good numbers of students and parents at our Speech Day on July 3rdto celebrate the achievements of the past academic year and in particular those of the students who are graduating this year.

Regards,

Mr S Lang
